Did Porn Cause Your Divorce?

Does viewing porn affect attitudes toward extramarital affairs?  A recent study says yes.

Using the General Social Survey (GSS), an ongoing survey that measures societal attitudes, researchers looked at data provided by more than 500 married adults during the years 2006 and 2008. The study explored how viewing pornography might affect future attitudes toward extramarital affairs.

Some key points of the study include the following:

  • Pornography tends to portray extramarital affairs in a positive way. Extramarital affairs are a leading factor in divorce in the United States.
  • The study found that viewing pornography led to more lenient attitudes and beliefs about extramarital affairs.
  • If viewing pornography leads to more positive attitudes about extramarital sex, it is possible that viewing pornography could be a factor in the initiation of an affair that results in divorce.

This is not the first look at the effect of pornography on the American marriage. In a 2002 survey by the American Association of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), data showed 56 percent of divorces handled by its membership involved one party with an obsessive interest in pornographic websites.

In 2005, a Senate subcommittee heard testimony on the effect of pornography on marriage and family. Researcher Jill Manning, M.S. noted that after viewing pornography, “Participants reported less satisfaction with their intimate partner, and specifically with their partner’s affection, physical appearance, sexual curiosity and sexual performance.”

In her testimony, Ms. Manning also reported on research that found repeatedly viewing pornography increased the interest of viewers in sexual encounters without emotional involvement.
