Lifelike AI Programs Add a New Wrinkle to Online Infidelity Claims

Sometimes it seems you can’t go a single week without hearing about a new way that artificial intelligence (AI) is being used. Whether this technology is utilized for educational, business or scientific purposes, AI has the ability to simulate human communication. In fact, some people both in the United States and abroad have taken to using ChatGPT and other programs to mimic conversations with humans. Instead of seeking help from a therapist, certain people are telling their problems to an AI interface, and others are even using AI for the type of feedback you’d typically associate with a close friend or romantic partner.

Divorce filings have shown that AI-powered “virtual companions” have caused serious problems in some marriages. According to data from a divorce website in the United Kingdom, an increasing number of applications received in early 2025 referenced a partner’s use of chatbot apps such as Replika and Anima, as well as emerging platforms like DreamBF, AI, and WifeGPT—tools designed to simulate intimacy and emotional support.

With most divorces in the United States being filed on a no-fault basis, it can be more difficult to assess the extent of harm being caused by these online “affairs,” but there are several reasons why attachment to a virtual persona can strain the marital bond. Various forms of technology can be addictive, and a spouse might get frustrated if their partner is spending significant time paying attention to a phone or laptop instead of them.

Many AI platforms are geared to keeping users engaged by responding with positive messages that reflect what users want to hear. A husband or wife might utilize technology as a form of escapism where they can be sure that a conversation won’t involve uncompleted chores or overspending. Some of the services offering virtual partners do have premium levels, so it is possible that devotion to an online companion could negatively affect household finances.

Though close attachment to an AI-generated partner does not technically qualify as adultery, at least for now, it might be the reason that you or your spouse decides to end your marriage. If this occurs, strong guidance from an experienced divorce attorney can help you understand what to expect during the legal process.
