Survey of Women Finds Link Between Midlife Physical Changes and Divorce

by | Mar 20, 2026 | Divorce

There’s no end to the potential reasons that might lead someone to seek a divorce. Infidelity, financial woes and plain old boredom are linked to many marital breakups. A recent survey, combined with analysis from experts, indicates that even natural physical changes can influence someone to end their marriage.

Increased attention on the rise in divorce rates among spouses 50 and older has led to a wide range of explanations as to why this is occurring. Along with longer lifespans, reduced stigma and the ability to break up without affecting minor children, a British organization found that a majority of women surveyed said that their perimenopause or menopause contributed to their divorce.

Physical, emotional and social factors contribute to this link. Perimenopause can begin when a woman is in her late 30s or 40s, and menopause follows after that. These hormonal changes frequently trigger symptoms such as disrupted sleep, brain fog, mood changes and a decreased sex drive. While some husbands are sensitive to what is happening during this phase of life, these effects can drive spouses apart.

What is sometimes referred to as the “change of life” might prompt a woman to reassess her life and consider whether she wants to make other changes as a new chapter begins. Despite some equalization of household chores, wives usually still carry a majority of the load, even if they work outside the home. Perimenopause or menopause might prompt women to seek adjustments at home, or file for divorce if no change is forthcoming.

As menopause marks the end of child-bearing years, spouses who remained together for the sake of young children might no longer have this concern. Middle age brings different concerns, including the increased likelihood of medical problems, and possibly the need to take care of elderly parents. If midlife physical changes in yourself or your partner have clarified your decision to divorce, you should be aware of the particular concerns of individuals in their 40s, 50s and beyond. One important consideration for many people going thorough a “gray divorce” is the need to secure appropriate health insurance coverage
